Reunions

I wrote this single after attending a landmark high school reunion. I wrote this single after attending a landmark high school reunion. After the Frighday night reception, a bunch of classmates were sitting at an outdoor restaurant at about 11:00 PM, with the Cedar River flowing in the background. Stars were out, as was the moon, as I recall. I was talking to people I hadn't even heard about in decades.. This was no longer my home, but it all seemed so familiar, comfortable, and relaxing. I wrote "Reunions," but let it sit 15 months before recording it. Then I let it sit another year before "releasing" it. Just wasn't sure I liked it a lot. I then decided it was really OK in spite of imperfections. Thanks to Carmen Nickerson for the harmony lines, Alan Arber for percussion and Steve Armstrong for the bass part. Guy Fiorentini mixed the 4 different session me together.

Across the Great Divide

This is a single. This is maybe my favorite folk song ever. Written by Kate Wolf, the words regarding the passage of time are beautiful and elemental. Hope you enjoy this arrangement with Red Greer on fiddle and Steve Armstrong on bass.

Real music. No loops, samples. Just musicians playing into microphones.

Slippery Shoes

Bill Armstrong

In cart Not available Out of stock

This is a single. Acoustic folk with a swing feel, this song is about temptation and the slippery slope. Steve Armstrong's bass, Red Greer's evil fiddle, Pat Smith's guitar solo, and a little background melodica combine to make this just creepy enough!

I have been asked many times what genre I play. Slippery Shoes is a kind of mix of swing, folk

Finger style guitar and vocals intended to tell a story, with genres from acoustic blues to country to folk pop.

I enjoy blues, especially acoustic blues, folk, country, standards, and folk rock. Hence my music tends to be on the eclectic side. "Different Hues" reflects that, with some original positive-message folk pop tunes, a traditional song from the 1800's (done in acoustic blues style), an acoustic blues instrumental (Was the Machine On?), and a favorite cover from each of three great composers, John Hiatt, John Gorka, and Billy Bragg. I think my originals are influenced by Keb Mo's early songs, in which even blues tunes had a positive message. Backed by my brother, Steve (an outstanding finger style player) on Hoffner Bass, Blue Rick Gerek on harp, Carmen Nickerson on vocals, and Scott Wenzel on snare, the music is about the story and is definitely not over-produced.... some today might find it minimalist. To achieve a natural feel, recording engineer and producer, Guy Fiorentini, recorded most tracks literally in the living room. We hope you will enjoy the music and purchase an album, download a track from the album or one of the other tracks I have included on the CD Baby site. Thanks so much for checking us out!

They say a good album should have a unifying theme. Turns out the unifying theme for this album is its title, "How'd We Get Here?" Cable News Blues--how did we get to the point where "news" is all about entertainment and shock value? Opioid: How Did Getting' Well Bring You Down So Low?--How did we get to the point where our medicines addict us and even kill us? Papa's Song (Inspired by watching my grand kids play)--How did I get this old? Did I miss some years??? The other four songs are about relationships that are not going well. I certainly did not mean for that to be an emphasis of this album, but I just picked and wrote songs that happened to have that theme, I guess! In any case, the fictional characters in those songs have to be thinking, "How'd We Get Here?' (I must state that my relationships happen to be going very well, thank you!). This is my first work recorded in my home studio--thanks for Apple for answering endless questions regarding Logic Pro software. Other thanks: Brother Steve Armstrong for bass parts on "Cable News Blues" and "Sante Fe" and electric guitar work on "Cable News Blues." To Carmen Nickerson for vocal harmonies on "How Did Getting' Well.." and "Bring it On Home." Peter Young for percussion on "Cable News Blues," and "Bring it On Home." Guy Fiorentini for mixing skills. I am responsible for all other parts...for better or for worse! Hope you find something to enjoy.
